If Luke Donald were to be selected as the next captain of Europe’s Ryder Cup team, he has sworn not to pull a “Henrik” and join LIV Golf. According to rumors, the Englishman might be named Rome’s next captain as early as next week. On the day such reports surfaced, Donald told Golfweek, “There’s nothing official to report.”

He further stated, “I spoke with Guy [Kinnings, director of the Ryder Cup] at the European Tour. That is all I am aware of at this time. Since Thomas Bjorn and a few other guys are taking my chances into consideration, I am confident in my chances.

“If I were to be appointed as captain, I would honor my commitment and see it through. I’ll put it like this. A Henrik wouldn’t be performed by me. The previous World No. 1 claims to be “surprised” that Henrik Stenson submitted his name despite wishing to join LIV Golf, which he has since done.

The Swede claimed that before being “removed,” he “made every arrangement imaginable” to play LIV and carry out his duties as Ryder Cup captain. “I was astonished that he would submit his name if his intention was to attend LIV. You know, the whispers, and I hate to talk about rumors, but rumors are that he had been in communication with the competitor tours, whatever they were, and he was quite intrigued, regarding Stenson”, Donald stated.

“And from what I can tell, the European Tour was aware of that as well. They clearly believed him when he said he wouldn’t do it. We must all agree to a clause or contract stipulating that we won’t cooperate with LIV.” “I suppose I’m disappointed that he would submit his name and then choose LIV. I can understand why some guys would go to LIV under specific circumstances related to their careers and other things. But there must be a significant sacrifice made.” The Englishman also disclosed that LIV had requested his assistance with the broadcast; however, he had respectfully rejected it.
