The professional golfing world has recently become a arena for intense debates, all centered around a critical question: is money corrupting the very soul of this sport? Canadian golfer Mackenzie Hughes believes that excessive focus on financial gains has overshadowed the true love for the sport.

In a recent interview with CBS Sports at The Genesis Invitational 2024, Hughes shared his thoughts on the current state of professional golfers. According to him, spotlight in golf has moved towards money in current times and that the days are gone when players were motivated by the nature of competing against the best.

It’s just kind of unfortunate in the game right now where it just seems that it’s just all about the money... how much money can I make. Kind of lost the spirit of the game in the process.

He stressed the importance of staying true to the values of the game and mentioned his concern that some players may have lost sight of this. Hughes also recognized that fans, who are so important for the sport, might be growing frustrated of the present situation.

Mackenzie Hughes performance at The Genesis Invitational 2024 so far

Mackenzie Hughes got off to a strong start at The Genesis Invitational 2024. He kicked things off with a solid 69 in the first round, followed by an impressive 65 in the second round. However, he faced some challenges in the third round, shooting a 1-over par 72. Unfortunately, this caused him to slip to eighth place and finish in a tie for tenth.

Hughes ended up sharing the position with Adam Svensson, Adam Hadwin, Beau Hossler, and Tom Hoge. On Saturday, he had a mix of ups and downs, managing a birdie and a bogey on the front nine. This resulted in a score of 72. In the first round, Hughes showed his skills with four birdies, four bogeys, and an eagle.

Speaking of the Genesis Invitational, Patrick Cantlay continued to dominate the proceedings and maintained his lead after the third round with a score of 14 under. Xander Schauffele and Will Zalatoris shared second place at 12-under. Who will now come out on top on Sunday at the Riviera course now remains to be seen.
