“Need a high-stakes PGA vs LIV Ryder Cup tournament”- Fans suggest face-off to settle scores as Saudi Golf CEO Majed Al Sorour issues rejoinder
Saudi Golf CEO Majed Al Sorour
A few days ago, a New Yorker article had quoted Saudi Golf CEO Majed Al Sorour as saying that the LIV Golf league had the ability to build its own Masters tournament from scratch with the kind of star power it boasts. Since inception, the Saudi Arabia-backed LIV has constantly been in tussle with PGA, the organization that currently conducts the four golfing majors, one of which is the prestigious Masters tournament.
However, now, Sorour has issued a rejoinder on Twitter claiming that he never meant to convey disrespect for the Masters event and that LIV golfers would only benefit if they were given a chance to play there. Golf fans on Twitter didn’t see any love between the two organizations though and started another hate debate focusing on whether LIV should even exist in the first place. We unfold the story for you below.
One golf fan, however, may have provided the perfect solution to end the LIV-PGA tussle even while passing it off as a casual joke.
Interestingly, LIV Golf is supported by the Public Investment Fund, which is Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. In 2018, Sorour was selected to head Saudi Golf, the country’s golfing federation which is in charge for grooming players, advertising the sport and conducting the Saudi International tournament, which was initially a European Tour event in 2019, having now turned into an Asian Tour event.

Majed Al Sorour had reportedly claimed he would “celebrate” if the Masters decided to ban LIV players and form his own bigger tournaments
Initially, the New Yorker had put out obviously opposite views from what Sorour is now offering, which had indeed sent shockwaves throughout the golfing world.
The four major tournaments in golf, have been the most prestigious events for decades in the rich sport’s history, unparalleled across the history of any other sport, with lawn tennis also coming only slightly close with a similar legacy. The Masters Tournament, US Open Championship, The Open Championship and US PGA Championship are currently the four recognized majors in golf.
“For now, the majors are siding with the Tour, and I don’t know why,” Sorour was initially quoted as saying. “If the majors decide not to have our players play? I will celebrate. I will create my own majors for my players. Honestly, I think all the tours are being run by guys who don’t understand business.”
It’s possible that Sorour hadn’t properly measured the consequences of what he said in a moment of anger and was later confronted by his seniors or men of reason around him to take back his statements.
