On Sunday, England’s Matt Fitzpatrick defeated Jordan Spieth in an intense playoff round to win the prestigious RBC Heritage. This win marked his second career win on the PGA Tour. Spieth came close to winning it himself in the first and second play-off round.

In the third round, the American sent his shot wide off the hole, opening a path for his opponent to grab the win. “I don’t know how the one on the first play-off hole didn’t go in,” Spieth said after the matchup.

Both golfers drove their shots well. Spieth’s shot landed 12.5 feet from the hole while Fitzpatrick’s went over 33 feet. Spieth birdie’s attempt failed to do what he had hoped for. For Fitzpatrick, this was just what he wanted, as he made his par. This set up the duo for their second playoff hole.

Once again they hit great shots which landed some 10 feet to the hole. Fitzpatrick then sent his birdie putt well left of the cup which opened up the door for Spieth. The American blew the chance and sent his effort inches away at the right of the cup. This led the two back to the 18th, where Fitzpatrick took his chance to snatch the victory.

Fitzpatrick win on Sunday made him the second Englishman to win the RBC Heritage. Nick Faldo was the first to do so in 1984. Apart from the title obviously, Fitzpatrick earned a price reward of $3.6 million. This prize pool is double the previous year. He also has leaped to a career-high No. 8 in the Official World Gold Rankings.

The day did not start with any great advantage for Fitzpatrick. He led off the proceedings with a 1-shot lead. Spieth who was looking to retain his title had to settle down for a runners-up spot. He had defeated Patrick Cantley in the play-off last year to achieve the title.

Spieth’s loss now has him standing at a 5-4 record in playoffs throughout his career. He has now finished in the top 10 on five occasions this season, including a T4 finish at the Masters last week.

For Fitzpatrick, it was like a dream come true moment. He recalled watching the great Tiger Woods at Harbour Town as a fan. Perhaps luck played a major role in his winning but it is said very often, fortune favors the brave. Fitzpatrick was brave as he did not buckle under the pressure of playing against some of the greats.

Meanwhile, Jon Rahm had a disappointing performance at this tournament. He could be excused for the fatigue he suffered after winning the Masters a week ago. The Spaniard was competing for his fifth victory of the year. His next appearance will be at the Mexico Open where he sets to defend his title.
