The game of golf is defined by the number of strokes. A unique sport in its own right, golf is one sport where the lower the score, the better is the performance of a player. One shot can change the whole course of action. During the final round of the 3M Open on Sunday, JT Poston was reminded of this in an unfortunate way.

As Lee Hodges had already wrapped up the top spot, Poston was aiming for a solo second finish. At the final hole, he decided to gamble and instead of playing it safe, took the hard way. He eventually ended up firing a triple bogey which cost him the runner-up spot and a quarter of a million. While many criticized him, Max Homa was one of the few to defend his actions.

Can’t respect the play more. Good on u boys,” Homa tweeted in his defense of Poston’ action. The six-time tour winner was left surprised by the actions of Poston and applauded him for his bravery. The 30-year-old golfer could have made a par attempt which would have seen him bag $865,000 from the event. However, he decided to go the aggressive way his plan backfired. He would finish tied for the second spot and took home a cash prize of $590,000.

JT Poston backs his decision at the 3M Open despite losing

The 3M Open championship saw many big names sit out as they prepared for the upcoming events. This allowed some others who were having a hard time to qualify and make the cut, another opportunity to shine. While Lee Hodges went wire-to-wire without losing his grip, the determination to win was still in the eyes of JT Poston.

Realistically his chances of winning were very low. However, like almost every athlete, Poston was not interested in finishing second. He wanted to chase Hodges right till the end. Things, unfortunately, went wrong for the ambitious golfer. After being called out by many, he would share his thought and said he is always “trying to win.”

His response has since earned respect from golfing fans around the world. Now with the support of Max Homa by his side, those who argued that it was the wrong decision would probably change their minds. While Poston may not be a big name compared to the others, he has two professional tour wins under his belt. His win at the Wyndham Championship in 2019 and John Deere Classic in 2022 make him a very competitive opponent.
