The name of Jon Rahm has been making headlines in the golfing world. The current world number one is almost halfway through achieving one of the greatest achievements in the field of golf. The 28-year-old Spaniard won the US Open in 2021 and added the green jacket of Masters in April last month. With the PGA Championship up for grabs, Rahm is inching closer to greatness. If he manages to win, he gets one step closer to the elusive grand slam title.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the tournament, Rahm explained that he is not thinking of which championship to select. Swimming great Michael Phelps was overwhelmed by the precise words used by Rahm and commented “well said” under a post.
“Not that much more. Obviously, if I were to win this week or the Open Championship, it really becomes a true reality, but winning two majors is not easy, and picking which ones you win is a little ludicrous to think about it,” Rahm said in the press conference.
“I think obviously winning the grand slam would be abolutely be amazing, but i think – without sounding too conceited or arrogant, I’d rather focus on the number of majors you win than having the Grand slam per se,” he added.
Jon Rahm to enter PGA Championship with his sight set on glory
The numbers do not lie. The reason why he is ranked number one, at the top, is because Jon Rahm is really good at golf. With one more win, he would be looking to a great close to an exclusive list. In the long history of golf, only five players have achieved to complete the grand slam.
They are Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, and the legendary Tiger Woods. Meanwhile, Jordan Speith (PGA), Phil Mickelson (US Open), and Rory McIlroy (Masters) are one win away from joining them.
This year has been a profitable one for Rahm. He has 12 starts, and he has won 4 championships – including the Masters title in April. The way he is playing has led many experts to predict that he can win all four majors in a calendar year. If he manages to do so, he will be the first player since Bobby Jones in 1930 to accomplish this feat.
The PGA Championship this year will take place from May 18. It will be hosted at its regular venue at the Oak Hill Country Club. With the likes of both Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, Rahm will have to be at his best to get the job done. This event will also mark several LIV Golf players who were invited by the organization.
