2024 Presidents Cup captain Mike Weir announces LIV Golfers’ ineligibility to participate in the September event, yet again. The Saudi-backed players are once again excluded from the thrilling event, but Weir hopes they’ll get their chance in 2026. With PGA and LIV’s infighting going on since 2022, it was highly unlikely for the board to allow departed players back in the tournament.
It’ll be Weir’s first time captaincy since being a veteran player in the event from 2000 to 2009. He also served as vice-captain twice, securing his crown in the 2024 Presidents Cup. Unfortunately, he won’t be able to add any LIV Golfers to his 12-man team.
Since the Presidents Cup is hosted by the PGA Tour and given the history between the two leagues, the result was not so surprising. No matter what changes the board makes in the future, the players will be excluded from participation this year following 2022’s route. As of now all the players who exited from the PGA remain suspended by the league.
Weir stated that although he wants to have the best players on his international team “it’s just an unfortunate situation…right now.” Furthermore, he admitted that he likes his current team and is confident in the players to win the Cup since 1998.
I’ve been told they’re not eligible…not going to be eligible but hopefully going forward…they are. It is a shame.Mike Weir as per Golf Magic.
“It’s going to be different,” Mike Weir excited to face U.S. team at Presidents Cup
Despite LIV Golfer’s exclusion, Mike Weir is excited to make the American team feel as “uncomfortable” and “like a real away game for them”. He wants this year to be challenging, fun, and different than other times and hopes to bring the Cup back.
“It’s going to be different,” Weir stated during a video teleconference from Bay Hill. He’s looking forward to making the event more engaging for the fans by taking home country and course advantage. He wants the crowd to be “a little bit louder” and raucous than in the past. Weir recalls the crowd when Tiger Woods was playing for the Presidents Cup and wishes to replicate the atmosphere in 2024.
Although with the PGA Tour’s decision to not include any LIV Golf players, Weir’s team will be missing out on Joaquin Niemann, Cam Smith, Mito Pereira, Carlos Ortiz, Abraham Ancer, and Sebastian Munoz. But it’s not only the International team that’ll be missing out.
The U.S. team will also not be able to recruit Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChameau, and Talor Gooch. They’ll be out of Jim Furyk’s team that’ll compete at Royal Montreal Golf Club from 26 to 29 September.
The U.S. is looking forward to winning their trophy 13th time for a tenth consecutive year. Since the Presidents Cup was founded in 1994, the Internationals won in 1998 and tied the match once in 2003.
