Murdered journalist’s widow calls for ban on LIV Golf Series players

The recent Saudi backed LIV Golf Series has cause quite the controversy in the golf world. The tension between the golfers who made the switch and those who did not is quite extreme. With the PGA Tour unhappy with the defectors, they had threatened disciplinary action against them.

They held out on the threat, and suspended 17 of the golfer for switching from the PGA Tour to the LIV Golf Series. The LIV Series headed up by Greg Norman and bankrolled by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF)— Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He allegedly ordered the killing of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018, and the country holds mass executions, persecutes lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, and oppresses women. Recently, Kashoggi’s wife spoke out about the incident.

The PGA Tour has gone ahead and suspended 17 golfers indefinitely. “This will show that there are consequences for supporting murderers, and it will show the murderers that they are not escaping justice,” she said to rt.com. The United States Golf Association has already confirmed that all those who qualified for their tournament will be eligible on the day of the US Open.

“If the players and organizers say they oppose human rights violations, they should act on that,” Cengiz said. “Otherwise their words are empty – only said to try to make themselves look better and not to change anything in Saudi Arabia. They should be insisting on justice for Jamal and the countless persons targeted and abused in the Kingdom. And they should not be participating in sports paid for by the very abusers,” she concluded.
