The new Netflix golf documentary “Full Swing” has definitely taken the golf world by storm. From the fame and fortune to the tears and laughter of golf, the series captures an insight into the elite sport like no other. The centre of professional golf come with a never-ending bout of intensity, rivalry and of course, respect. Director and producer Chad Mumm’s idea 2 years ago has finally taken shape- becoming a reality.
The eight part series is quite an exploration into the LIV Golf Series vs the PGA Tour as well. The highly controversial series backed by the Saudi PIF has seen massive backlash since its inception. It happened right in the middle of shooting Full Swing, and they managed to capture it all. The likes of Dustin Johnson and Ian Poulter were sanctioned by the Series.
“For us, we had a group of characters who were all on the PGA Tour when we started the show. By the time we finished the show, it was like a 50/50 split. The show that we thought we were making, we had to pivot and suddenly we’re making a show about a world where there was a civil war going on,” said producer Paul Martin.
Ian Poulter to Brooks Koepka- Golfers give their reasons for joining the LIV Golf Series in Full Swing
“You put all that in the mix with the competitive pressure of a major championship and it combusts!” said executive producer, Chadd Mumm. Taking place over 2 years, the series has managed to cover everything it can in 2021 and 2022- and they couldn’t have picked a better time to do so.
Tony Finau, golfer also shared the same thoughts. “All I know is that Netflix couldn’t have picked a better year to follow the PGA Tour.” Beside the LIV Series, the Docuseries also explores the lavish life of golfers, not to mention the effort that goes behind their games and practices.
For Dustin Johnson, it was as simple as playing less, and earning more. “For me, it was playing less, making more money – pretty simple.” Johnson said that if someone offered him a same job for more money, anyone would take the offer. Other players also shared the same insights and gave their reasons to join the LIV Series.
Ian Poulter said in the series, “The fact of there being guaranteed money at play is obviously an attraction.” For him, money is all relative. He treats golf as job and wishes to maximise every bit of his potential over the next few years. Finally, Brooks Koepka mentioned that his family was the most important to him- and taking care of them was his priority
