The final golf major of 2023 is now in history books. A four-day fierce competition at the Royal Liverpool saw Brain Harman cam out on top. The 36-year-old claimed his first major title in his career. Harman finished an astonishing six strokes clear of runners-up, displaying an unparalleled level of dominance. This not only resulted in him taking the claret jug but also the top prize from an improved purse.

Every major this year saw an increase from the previous prize pool. This year, the purse at the Open saw a rise of $2.5 million from last year. The tournament started off with a whopping $16.5 million pool. The tournament itself had no shortage of action and controversy as players losing their minds, protestors breaking in, and big names missing the cut were all witnessed beforehand.

Harman came out flying from the blocks early on the event. He went on to establish a five-stroke lead after the conclusion of round two. He carried this lead and was able to maintain it following the end of the round on Saturday. Despite having a little hiccup on Sunday, he managed to find his feet again and walked out from the Royal Liverpool course as the winner.

How much money did the other golfers receive from the Open Championship prize pool?

Probably the most unfortunate thing about sports is that there can be only one winner. While Brian Harman took home the big one, four golfers finished as runners-up behind him, tied for the second spot. Jon Rahm’s resurgence from round three after a disastrous opening, Tom Kim’s resilient effort despite suffering an ankle injury, Sepp Straka and Jason Day’s heroics saw them take away $1,084,625 each.

One golfer that came into the tournament with huge momentum was Rory McIlroy. The North Irishman had clinched the Scottish Open a few ago and was looking to end his major drought. However, his round three performance saw him being thrown out of the mix. He did fight back and finished with a respectable tied top-six finish with Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo. The duo collected $551,250 each.

The tournament was full of surprises. India’s Shubhankar Sharma and Australia’s Cameron Young finished tied for the top eight and took home $403,350 each. The major disappointment was the performances of big names including Scottie Scheffler and Cameron Smith. Scheffler, along with Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, and a bunch of others finished tied-21. They all collected $121,490 for their efforts.

Meanwhile, former champion Smith was locked in with fellow LIV star Patrick Reed, Patrick Cantlay, and Wyndham Clark were locked in the tied-33 spot. They all collected a cheque of $84,113. The next event on the PGA Tour schedule is the 3M Open. Which of these players will be seen taking part there would be an interesting watch as major championships are done for the year.
