After his poor display in the first round of the Open Championship, several users and fans called out Justin Thomas. The American golfer had a nightmarish round on Thursday as he struggled at the final holes. Internet golfing sensation Paige Spiranac has now come out in support of JT after he was labeled “overrated” by some social media users.

Thomas had an afternoon to forget at the Hoylake on Thursday. He managed a high first-round score of 82 which dampen his chances of succeeding. He fired three double bogeys and five bogeys and only two birdies. Fans were quick to slam and troll him for his outing. Spiranac then came and helped him out. The internet star pointed out people had forgotten that Thomas is a two-time major winner.

“It’s wild to me that people are calling JT overrated because he’s having a bad stretch,” Spiranac tweeted out. She added in her tweet that Thomas is a 15-time winner and has claimed two major championships. She later added that they have all been there and it is pretty common in golf. The damage was already done for Thomas as he missed the cut.

Justin Thomas hopes to bounce back from recent disappointment at the 3M Open

There comes a moment in the life of every professional player when they suffer from the highs and lows. Justin Thomas is right now going through this phase. Following the disastrous opening round, it was clear that he was no longer in contention for the cut and the trophy at the Open Championship. He is now focused on resolving the issues surrounding him.

I’m trying to not focus too much on days like yesterday. I’m trying to not dwell on it,” Thomas was quoted by ESPN. He further added how it sucked because of it being the first round. “It just sucks when it’s the first round of a major and you have no chance anymore,” the golfer added.

Apart from Paige Spiranac, Zach Johnson and Rory McIlroy also extended their support to Thomas. When asked about the struggles of Thomas, McIlroy mentioned how he is one of the most talented guys out there. The Scottish Open champion added how everyone goes through these bad patches and expressed confidence in Thomas’ work ethic to get him out of this slump.

Thomas now has sight set at the 3M Open next week. He will hope to salvage his season with a good performance at the next event. It could play a huge part in his FedEx Cup and Ryder Cup standings. If he continues to struggle, his chances at the biennial event look slim.
