The sport of golf is going through one of its most challenging times. With the announcement of the merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, the narrative has changed completely. Despite this, the current schedule has no effect on it and is working as it should. LIV Golf is back in London for a ninth event and had a scary moment involving Patrick Reed and a spectator.
London, one of the megacities of the world, is a very attractive place. As a reason for this, the Saudi-funded tour made it their first stop. A year later, they are back at the place where it all began for them. To catch a glimpse of some of the big names in golf, several fans made their presence felt at the Centurion Club. However, things almost went horribly wrong when Patrick Reed almost hit a fan with his shot during the first round.
During the first day of the event on Friday, Reed found himself struggling at the 13th hole. His shot got stuck in the thick grass of the course, leaving the American trying to find a way out. Reed would then mislaunch his shot. A call of “fore” to signal the fan about the danger soon came out of his mouth.
The fan, though, was fortunate enough to avoid the hit just in time. This later served as an important reminder to fans and others watching any particular sport to keep a safe distance. Had the ball hit the head of the fan, things could have gone really ugly for Reed, his team, and the LIV league itself.
How is the event shaping up going into final round?
After an impressive Round one performance on Friday, Australian Cameron Smith started off the second round where he left off. The 29-year-old had a great outing for the second consecutive day. A day before shooting a score of 63 with late birdies, he carded a score of 67, to take a three-hole lead going into the final day.
This strong performance allowed Smith to solidify his lead at the top of the standings. In the second round, he carded six birdies and two bogeys to put him in the driver’s seat. “It was just a long day,” Smith said after the end of round two. Though he is leading, he is aware of the fact that Thomas Pieters, Marc Leishman and Louis Oosthuizen are all tied for second place. One slip-up, and anyone of these can catch up to him.
This performance for Smith comes at the most perfect time for him. With the British Open drawing closer, the Aussie international will have momentum on his side. A strong sign-off from this event will surely make the defending champion of the Open one of the favorites to take home the prize.
