The Masters 2023 started right off the bat with huge controversies shaking up the internet. The first and biggest incident included Brooks Koepka’s caddie while the other involved 2-time Major winner Collin Morikawa.

Koepka was handed no penalties after an investigation done by The Masters’ Tournament Committee. The incident revolved around the 15th hole, as Koepka tied for the lead spot at 7-under.  Golf analyst and previous PGA players Paul McGinley and Brandlee Chamblee were among the few who questioned the event’s decision on penalty.

According to video evidence, Koepka’s caddie Ricky Elliott seemingly mouthed “five” after the LIV Golfer shot 5-iron under par-5, 15th green at Augusta National. As per the field rule, no player or his caddie is allowed to give or seek advice from any opponent on the greens. Following the rule, Brooks Kopeka should have been given a 2-shot penalty but remained scathed free.

According to The Masters’ Tournament Committee, no rules were broken by Brooks Koepka or his caddie Ricky Elliott. They released a statement, “Following the completion of Brooks Koepka’s round, the Committee questioned his caddie and others in the group about a possible incident on No. 15”.

All involved were adamant that no advice was given or requested. Consequently, the Committee determined that there was no breach of the Rules.” Both Paul McGinley and Brandel Chamblee feel there should have been a penalty handed to the PGA defector.

Plus, they are not the only ones to feel so. The golf world has been divided into opinions regarding this incident. McGinley stated, “It’s very obvious. Anybody looking at those pictures, it’s very obvious what happens. It’s staggering that they denied it because the video evidence is there”.

McGinley stated that it’s “common practice” to discreetly share information among players, according to NY Post. Even though Chamblee disagrees with his statement, he agrees that a penalty should have been called.

Chamblee stated, “It looked to me that Ricky Elliot [Koepka’s caddie] was clearly looking at [Woodland’s caddie] when he said ‘five’. It was very obvious that he said ‘five.’ ” Brooks Koepka denied any such claims, stating there was no breach of rules on field.

He said, “Yeah, we looked at it when we got back in. [Woodland] and Butchie [his caddie] had no idea what we were hitting”. “They didn’t even know because — I know that fact because GW asked me what we hit walking off, when we were walking down. So that’s all I can give you.
