“$20 million for 20 events”: Does the PGA Tour’s new ‘Tour within tour’ with elite golfers commitment seem too much like LIV Golf?

The controversy between the PGA Tour and the LIV Golf series does not seem to reduce- in fact it has gotten worse as the backlash continues to increase. However, now in retaliation to the LIV Series, the PGA Tour has come up with its own series; a tour within a tour that sees the elite players of golf get together.

PGA Comissioner Jay Monahan announced recently that the tour will bring the top players of the game together more often. There will be Additional Elevated Games for 2023, which includes the elite players committing to at least 20 tour events. These Tour events include 12 new events, the Players Championship, four majors and any three PGA Tour events.

“Our top players are firmly behind the Tour,” said Monahan according to PGA Tour, “helping us deliver an unmatched product to our fans, who will be all but guaranteed to see the best players competing against each other in 20 events or more throughout the season.”

The new tour will have the Sentry Tournament of Champions, The Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, Memorial Tournament presented by Workday, World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play and the three FedExCup Playoffs events. They are expected to have prize money purses of around $20 million at least.

“Every single member of the PGA TOUR is going to benefit from the changes that we’re going to be making,” Commissioner Monahan said. “The Tour is going to continue to grow by having the best players in the world committed to it, by us continuing to lean into and invest in our ethos, which is the single-best competitive platform.” An Earnings Assurance Program will guarantee all fully-exempt Tour members at least $500,000 per year.
