“That’s BS”: Phil Mickelson’s coach is not happy with his defection to LIV Golf Series
Phil Mickelson and Butch Harmon
The LIV Golf series has caused its fair share of drama since its inception. Phil Mickelson was one of the first golfers to make the switch for a whopping $200 million- making him the most paid golfer in the world. While other golfers also defected after him, the PGA Tour sanctioned and suspended almost all of them- which caused even more tension in the golf world.
Mickelson made his debut in the competition in June at the very first event. After the suspensions however, Mickelson and DeChambeau led an antitrust lawsuit in which the LIV Golf series has been named as an interest party. Recently while talking to Mickelson’s coach Butch Harmon, the latter expressed his disappointment for the golfer joining the controversial Saudi backed series.
Harmon who is known as a top-tier coach, stated that he would have moved to LIV Golf if he were a player now, due to the paycheck. Harmon said that the golfers should admit that they are taking money to play the Series. Harmon has coached both Mickelson and the founder of LIV Golf, Greg Norman.
Butch Harmon disappointed with Phil Mickelson for joining the LIV Golf Series for money
“I think the players that went to the LIV — you’re probably not going to agree with me on this — they created the problem because they went for the money, there’s no doubt about it. That’s BS about I’m going to play less and I’m going to spend more time at home,” said Harmon according to Sports Keeda. He said that the PR of LIV has not been good, and the first thing the golfers needed to do was admit they did it for the money.
“This ‘I’m going to grow the game better’ — no, that has nothing to do with it; you’re not growing any game. They’re growing their bank accounts. Which every sportsman has the right to do — to get the best deal you can get. So, I have a problem with people complaining about that.” Harmon firmly believes that the LIV Series has brought this upon themselves.
