“Phil Mickelson should captain the Ryder Cup”- Davis Love III advises to preserve LIV Golf legacy

Davis Phil Mickelson has claimed that Love III tried to persuade him to reconsider joining LIV Golf because he wanted to help him establish his legacy as a Ryder Cup skipper. Mickelson agreed to leave the PGA Tour for LIV Golf in exchange for a rumoured $200 million contract. He was warned beforehand that the action would probably have an influence on his participation in Ryder Cups and Presidents Cups before the PGA Tour suspended him minutes after he hit his opening shot in the LIV Golf Series.
Phil sues the PGA Tour

A lawsuit launched by Mickelson and 10 other LIV players alleging that the PGA Tour is harming their careers is set to go to trial. Love III, a former PGA Tour board member and member of the Hall of Fame, has stated he discussed the situation with Mickelson before his decision, outlining potential outcomes. He was upset that the six-time major winner disregarded his advice.
Love III responded when asked if Mickelson was aware of the consequences of joining LIV: “That’s the point I attempted to explain to him. Before you walk over there and start playing, I said, let’s attempt to work this out. We want Phil Mickelson to start the Masters as an honorary starter and to lead the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup teams. That was due to him.”
Love is upset with how things have become after Mickelson shocked golf in 2021 by becoming the oldest major champion at age 50 by winning the US PGA Championship at Kiawah Island.
Love III stated on the Fire Drill podcast, “It has changed from his being a hero in Kiawah to people calling for him to be thrown out of the Hall of Fame. This decrease is sad. That’s sad.”
“I don’t remember how many teams I played on with him, his captains and helpers. We have about 20 teams present. The absence of Phil Mickelson from the squads makes me very unhappy.”
