In the world of golf, few players have quite stood out like Phil Mickelson. The veteran golfer has become the center of attention in recent years. His decision to join the LIV league was met with the fury of fans. The Lefty has time and again backed his move and the tour on social media. At the recent US Open, he was heckled twice by a person, who was later escorted by security.

The other fans in attendance tried to stand up for him. As the heckler continued to create a scene, the fans drowned him by loudly singing a happy birthday song. The heckler kept yelling at Mickelson for abandoning the PGA Tour and shaking hands with LIV Golf. This incident took place when the golfer went up from the 14th green. Unfortunately for Mickelson, he once again failed to make the cut.

The newly turned 53-year-old was celebrating his birthday on Friday when the first incident happened. In his historic career, Mickelson has claimed three other majors (The Masters, PGA Championship, and Open Championship) but the US Open has always eluded him. He has finished as a runner-up six times before in this competition.

On the first day of the event, the heckler was seen wearing a sombrero and insulting him. The six-time major champion did what he has been doing for long. He waited for the security to take action rather than giving in to the chants and causing a major scene.

The US Open is considered one of the most prestigious golf tournaments. This time, the event comes as a welcome distraction from the ongoing PGA-LIV merger saga. Before the event started, all eyes were on Phil Mickelson. The veteran golfer had found himself in the midst of a Twitter spat with Brandel Chamblee regarding the existence of the LIV league.

All of this soon went up in smoke when the PGA announced its merger with LIV. After this development, Mickelson did not offer any statement, simply stating that he could not be bothered to “waste any energy” on it. He was perhaps saving all of that for a historic run at the event, where he finally hoped to achieve his goal.

The Lefty was seen struggling after the first round. He shot one under 69 to start off but finished by shooting four under 74. This resulted in him missing the cut by one stroke. For a second successive year, he has failed to make the cut at the US Open. His drought for the maiden title and Career Grand Slam continues for another year.

Speaking of the US Open, the event is turning out to be an exciting one. Though various players have called out the golf course as “difficult” to play on, the leaderboard has gotten jammed up. Rickie Fowler and Wyndham Clark are tied for the first spot. Just behind them in third and fourth are Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler. The event is shaping for a grandstand finish.
