“Phil Mickelson would have been a distraction”: Former PGA winner not missed at Champions Dinner
Phil Mickelson misses Champions dinner
With the 2022 PGA Championship now started, defending champion Phil Mickelson will not be seen on his golf course to retain his title. That is not the only place that he hasn’t been seen, as the veteran also missed the Champions dinner that was held ahead of the tournament.
Mickelson made history at the age of 50 by becoming the oldest ever Major winner by winning the 2021 PGA Championship. Naturally he would be expected to be a big part of the Champions dinner, but shockingly he was nowhere to be seen. Tuesday’s dinner did however include Collin Morikawa, Jason Dufner, Martin Kaymer, Padraig Harrington, Keegan Bradley, Jason Dufner, Rich Beem as well as Rory McIlroy.
Phil Mickelson was not missed at Champions Dinner: Dave Stockton
Dave Stockton, who won the PGA Championship twice, in 1970 and 1976, said the presence of reigning champion Mickelson would have taken away from the PGA and the younger players. “It was a fun evening. Phil was not missed. I think Phil would have been a big distraction whether he was here – the story here this week is the PGA,” said Stockton to golfmonthly.com. Stockton was happy not to be sidetracked by Phil Mickelson.
Talking about the PGA Championships that are being held, Stockton wants Rory McIlroy to win and take another Major to his name. However he said that he would also be rooting for Jordan Spieth, continuing that all golfers will have to play exceptional golf this week. “I think it’s going to be a heck of a race to the end here. You’re going to have to get lucky to win. You’re going to have to play really, really good golf this week.”
