Phil Mickelson is one of the first names that comes to mind when you talk about the controversial LIV Golf. The American golfer has been pretty vocal about how much he is enjoying his time with the LIV.

Recently the 52-year-old veteran also stated that he is happy that he chose the “winning side” and that he can sense that the PGA Tour is trending downwards and the LIV Golf upwards.

However, despite joining the rebel league for the massive sum of $200 million – Phil Mickelson was very close to running the whole operation before its launch according to LIV CEO Greg Norman. The Saudi-backed circuit was delayed by Mickelson’s comments to the Fire Pit Collective in May, Norman said.

According to an article in the latest issue of the New Yorker, many of the key aspects of this year’s PGA Tour-LIV war have come into the limelight with one being Phil Mickelson’s statement before the inception.

Golf Saudi CEO Majed Al Sorour said Mickelson’s remarks caused LIV executives to question whether to move forward, specifically Sorour and Yasir Al-Rumayyan, governor of the Saudi Public Investment Fund.

“We have many players who want to come in now. But I need to protect my people.” The league was suddenly on the verge of collapse when Mickelson commented “scary motherf***ers.”

Sorour said, “I called the boss”—Rumayyan—“I said, ‘Everyone’s walking away. Do you want to do it, or not?’’ Sorour told Rumayyan he had a plan: “Get the biggest mediocre, get the ten that we have, get you and I, and let’s go play for twenty-five million dollars.” Rumayyan then decided to launch LIV immediately.

The former World No.2 earlier this year referred to the Saudis as “scary motherf***ers.” to get involved with.”

“We know they killed [Washington Post reporter Jamal] Khashoggi and have a horrible record on human rights. They execute people over there for being gay. Knowing all of this, why would I even consider it? Because this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reshape how the PGA Tour operates,” Mickelson was quoted.

However, the golfer then went on to deny that he had made any such comments. “I never did an interview with Alan Shipnuck. And I find that my experience with everybody associated with LIV Golf has been nothing but incredibly positive and I have the utmost respect for everybody that I’ve been involved with.”
