“I haven’t given myself enough chances”: Rory McIlroy about struggle in winning a Major Title
Rory Mcllroy
Rory McIlroy is one of the only 3 players alongside Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus to win 4 Major titles before the age of 25. However, things have not been as great recently for McIlroy, as he has struggled to get any more wins.
His last major win was warding off Phil Mickelson in 2014 to take the PGA Championship. However, the now 33-year-old has been so close recently to win another Major title but he just hasn’t been able to push himself over the line to win one. McIlroy opened about about how his drought is affecting his career.
“I think I haven’t given myself enough chances. I think if I would have had more chances, and realistic chances, it’s a bit like tournaments as well – the more you just keep putting yourself in those positions, the more comfortable you’re going to feel up there. And sooner or later, if you keep knocking on the door, one of those doors is going to open for you,” said Rory McIlroy to golfmonthly.com
Rory McIlroy talks about the effect of his Major drought
The four time Major Champion said that he did have a few chances to notch up another Major in 2018 at the Augusta Nationals. He said that he also had a chance last year, when he was tied for the lead at the US Open. While he does criticise himself quite a lot, McIlroy has also credited the rise of new golfers. “I think players are getting better and better. Whenever I won my last Major in 2014 I had never heard of Collin Morikawa, I’d never heard of Jon Rahm, a lot of these young guys that are coming through are playing unbelievably good golf.”
However, there is not all to look down upon in Rory McIlroy’s journey. While he has not won a major since 2014, he has won almost everything else. He has won won the Players Championship, FedEx Cups, Race to Dubai titles, World Golf Championships and even National Opens. “Yes, that hasn’t included a Major championship but I’ve played good enough golf in those seven years to win one. I’m staying as patient as I possibly can and to just keep giving myself chances. If I do keep giving myself chances hopefully those chances end up turning into wins.”
