Rory McIlroy created history for the first time at East Lake when he won the Tour Championship, becoming the first golfer to win 3 FedEx Cup Playoffs. McIlroy came up from behind Scottie Scheffler and Sungjae Im to secure his win in Atlanta. Rory shot a 5-under 65 in the final round and finished at 21 under, beating Scheffler and Im by one shot.
The more impressive part about the win was that McIlroy started with a triple bogey on his very first hole. Scheffler held a majority of the lead with for the first 69 holes of the game but a bogey on the par-4 16th dropped him out of the lead for the first time. This, coupled with his inability to make a bogey in the last rounds, meant that he was out of the running to possibly take the title.
However, the win did not come without its share of controversy, as an infarction on the 18th hole caused some issues with fans. Fans were not happy as the rules were turned ambiguous for the golfer, and it potentially helped him to take the win ahead of Scheffler.

The infraction in question occurred on the 18th hole when McIlroy air mailed his second shot into the stands, and saw his ball come to a stop alongside the temporary grandstand structure. According to the rules, a player is allowed to drop a ball if the swing is impeded. However, many fans argued that the swing was not in fact impeded, and that the PGA was playing into the hands of McIlroy.
