While the preparations for the Open continue, the Scottish Open concluded on Sunday with the triumph of Rory McIlroy. The 34-year-old held his cool from the start and took home the prize by finishing one stroke ahead of runner Robert MacIntyre. This was McIlroy’s 24th PGA tour title and his third title won in the United Kingdom.
The former world number one is one of the top players in golf right now. The 34-year-old had been on the receiving end of some of the worst heartbreaks as he kept on coming up short in tour events. This victory comes at a crucial time and gives the North Irishman much-needed confidence and momentum ahead of the Open in the upcoming days.
The tee times for the final round were changed due to the weather conditions. Despite the strong winds attempting to overthrow McIlroy efforts, the golfer was locked on. After leading the tournament through the first three rounds, McIlroy found himself one shot behind MacIntyre. It seemed once again history would repeat itself and McIlroy will lose the grip in the final moments.
However this time Mcilory was more determined to win. A four-foot birdie at the 17th hole tied them for the lead. The multi-time champion then used all of his experience to 2 iron for the birdie at the final hole. He finished the tournament 15-under 265 and replaced Jon Rahm from the second spot in the Official Golf World Rankings.
Twitter reacts as Rory McIlroy overcomes huge obstacles to win Scottish Open
In the recent past, it seemed luck was against Rory McIlroy. No matter how hard he tried he would just find a way to lose. Fans and experts started calling him out for his poor finishes. During the Scottish Open, he was up against a crowd who were rooting heavily for their national hero, Robert MacIntyre. This time he not only had to overcome his challenger but also the crowd.
This was his first victory since fending off Patrick Reed for the Dubai Desert Classic in January. “I feel since I open in Dubai, I’ve given myself tons of chances, and hopefully this win sort of breaks the seal for me, especially going into next week,” McIlroy said. Sharing a wide spectrum of Twitter reactions, here are a few of them connected to McIlory’s Scottish Open victory.
McIlroy has had a few tough weeks recently. The merger between the PGA and LIV has been a reason for it. The golfer made his intentions clear that he would rather retire than play for LIV. While the speculations regarding the future of golf continue to grow, McIlroy will be aiming to make this an important week. He will head to the Royal Liverpool, hoping to a nine-year drought.
