The excitement among golf fans is increasing day by day for the upcoming Ryder Cup. The biennial tournament this time will be hosted in Rome, Italy where team Europe will be hoping to bounce back. One of Team Europe’s members Rory McIlroy is now gearing up for the BMW PGA Championship. The North Irishman has now shared an interesting story regarding Michael Block at the PGA Championship.
Block, a club professional, stunned the world with his performance at the second major of the year. His incredible tale at the event turned out to be the Cindrella-esque story where he defied the odds and battled against some of the best. He was paired up with Mcilory and the duo had a great time at the greens. However, after the event, Block made a comment off the tee length of Mcilory and claimed he could be “one of the best players in the world” if he had the services like him.
“Oh, my god, what I would shoot from here where Rory hits it would be stupid. I think I’d be one of the best players in the world,” Block had commented. Looking back on those comments at the Golf Sub-par podcast, Mcilory seems to have taken a subtle dig at him.
“Whether he would be number No.1 in the world, I find that hard to believe,” Mcilory said after speaking with Drew Smoltz and Colt Knost, the co-hosts of the show. Interestingly, Block later apologized to Mcilory for his comments later on. It could be a slip of the tongue at a time when Block was flying high with momentum. The four-time major winner did not seem to be bothered by his antics and instead shared another story about him.
Rory McIlroy shares incredible story of Michael Block at the 18th hole
By the time the PGA Championship had started, the Michael Block party had taken over. There was a good reason for it as he was the underdog who was biting back. This fairytale story continued when he launched an ace (hole-in-one) at the 15th hole, which saw the crowd explode in joy. Rory McIlroy has now shared another tale of him at the 18th where Block defied once again impressed the crowd.
On the final hole at the Oak Hill Country Club, Block missed his second shot. This made things hard for him as the hole was on the right, close to the bunker. At that point, the multi-time PGA Tour winner thought there was no shot for Block to make the whole. What happened next? He made the shot correctly, landing the ball perfectly between the green and the bunker for an easy putt.
McIlroy recalled Block marking his ball and giving it clean to Harry (caddie of Mcilory). This lead the caddie to ask whether his short game is usually this good. Block replied with confidence “No, it’s usually better.” Needless to say, he went on the putt the effort which enabled him a top-15 finish for the tournament. Meanwhile, McIlroy finished the event tied or seventh, seven shots behind eventual winner Brooks Koepka.
