As the PGA Tour events take a break, golf fans were tuned in to the Irish Open for some excitement. The DP World Tour event saw Swedish golfer Vicent Norrman register another win on the tour as he claimed the top prize. However, the event is being talked more about another failure from four-time major champion Rory McIlroy.
The North Irishman was looking to snatch a national open. After struggling for two rounds, he roared back into contention with an electrifying performance in round three. This saw him move up to third in the rankings, firmly back in contention. He had a little luck on his side as he overcame the 16th-hole drama. Unfortunately for him, his luck would soon run out.
The former world number one had an afternoon to forget as he struggled heavily on the greens. He would sink his chances of winning by carding four water balls. By the time the round was over, Mcilory was far away from the rest of the running pack.
He would end the round with a score of 9-under 74 which enabled him to finish tied for 16th spot. He would conclude the tournament while being 6 shots behind Norrman from first. This has now raised concerns regarding his form going into the Ryder Cup.
Twitter reacts as Rory McIlroy fails to win again
Rory McIlroy is one of the most renowned golfers of this generation. The 34-year-old has always been under the spotlight while he participates. In his great career, he has registered over 37 professional wins. However, the number could have been more as he had missed several great chances right in the final round.
He was in contention for the US Open this year but lost the momentum late on. This saw Wyndham Clark win the tournament. The North Irishman was mocked brutally by fans for “choking” again at the majors. His performance in the final round at the Irish Open has once again drawn in criticism as users trolled the golfer for failing to win. One user on Twitter (now called X) wrote “He just chokes,” referring to his previous losses. Here are some other reactions to it.
With the Ryder Cup on the horizon, Mcilory’s struggles have raised some questions among experts. Compared to Team USA, Team Europe looks a little weak on paper. He is said to be one of the big names along with Jon Rahm and in-form Viktor Hovland to lead the side. They would be hoping he can find his form back soon as they get ready for the heavyweight clash in Rome later on in the month.
