The PGA Tour has introduced new rules and regulations for the 2024 season, and it is turning quite a lot of heads. The new changes have been attributed to a certain LIV Golf series. The PGA Tour is now being accused of copying them and their style of play. The regulations are causing mixed reactions amongst fans and golfers alike.

However, the loyal supporters of the PGA Tour fully believe that these changes are the future of golf, and that they are necessary to be implemented. Amongst these is Rory McIlroy, who is in favour of the new changes that the PGA Tour has brought on. After hearing the backlash regarding the LIV Golf series, McIlroy had quite a lot to say.

“The idea is we want top players and hot players,”  said McIlroy, further stating that, “tournament sponsors are going to want to pay for having the stars playing on the weekend.’’ He also stated rather clearly that no cut events have always been a part of the PGA Tour and they are nothing new.

“It’s trying to get the top guys versus the hot guys, right? I think that creates a really compelling product,” he said. “You play well for two or three weeks, you‘re in a designated event. You know then if you keep playing well you stay in them.” McIlroy said that it is a battle of the best out there on the course.

“We‘ve always had no-cut events on this Tour. If you think of like the four WGC’s (World Golf Championship) events, you’ve got the three playoffs events, you’ve got the CJ Cup, the Zozo, so there’s precedent there for no-cut events.” said Rory McIlroy, talking about the events that actually come with no cuts.

“The only reason no-cut events are a big deal is because LIV has come along. There is precedent for no-cut events. There’s been no-cut events since I’ve been a member of the Tour and way beyond that as well.” McIlroy has been one of the biggest advocates for the PGA TOUR, ever since the inception of LIV Golf.

However, what these new changes mean for the future of the PGA Tour one cannot tell just as of yet. However, one cannot ignore the impact that the LIV Golf series is having on the golf world. Whether it be new rules or a new style, the new Era of Golf has just began- and it is one to look forward to.
