Rory McIlroy’s former agent Andrew “Chubby” Chandler said he wouldn’t be surprised if the World No.2 decides to join the LIV Golf League for £750 million. Considering McIlroy’s 180s on LIV golfers, there’s a “10%” chance of him joining hands with the Saudi league.

Chandler talks about how McIlroy has always been the type of guy to voice opinions and also apologize for them if he’s in the wrong. He points back to McIlroy’s stance on the Ryder Cup in 2008 compared to his interest in the event now in 2024. “It’s typical Rory,” the former agent said.

Andrew “Chubby” Chandler recalls his conversation with Rory McIlroy on a beach at Gleneagles where the former World No.1 said “Ryder Cup meant nothing at all to him” whereas “there’s nobody bigger into the Ryder Cup now”. He further added,

If you’re being cynical, you might say he’s going to sign for about £750 million in a month’s time with LIV because he’s paving the way that LIV’s OK now, whereas it wasn’t…I’m sure it’s a possibility…if Rahm can do it, most guys can do it.

Will Rory McIlroy be following Jon Rahm’s step out of PGA?

There’s no guarantee that Rory McIlroy will sign with the Saudi-backed league, but his recent softened stance on LIV has brought about possibilities and assumptions among fans, and pundits alike. Jon Rahm who was once critical of LIV like McIlroy finally exited the PGA Tour in December 2023.

He once said that $400 million would not change his lifestyle too much so he would stick with the traditional Tour. But shortly afterward it was reported that the Spaniard joined LIV for reportedly a $600 million contract. Just like Rahm, McIlroy resigned from his position on the PGA Tour board in November as the merger discussions continued.

Although there’s no hint of McIlroy officially making a move to LIV, his former agent Andrew “Chubby” Chandler stated that there’s a “10%” chance he would actually do so. The merger talk which was expected to have a hearing on 31st December last year, got postponed to a later date. So far the discussions are still in process with many changes scheduled to take place in the future.
