After winning the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship last week, Kiwi golfer Ryan Fox paid tribute to the cricketing legend Shane Warne, who was once his amateur teammate.

The New Zealander golfer topped the charts at the event thanks to a one-shot win. Fox finished second in a team competition last year, along with the former Australian cricket captain. Warne later suffered an attack and passed away earlier this year in Thailand.

“To be honest the only person I can really think of at the moment is Warney,” Fox said after winning the tournament. “He meant a lot to me and this event and was a great mate. It’s a terrible shame he’s not here.”

The Australian legspinner passed away in March earlier this year in Thailand. Warne is still regarded as the finest legspinners of all time as he established a number of records throughout his career. He became the first bowler to reach 700 wickets in a Test match.

After triumphing at the World Super 6 title in 2019 and the Ras Al Khaimah Classic in 2022, the golfer was his third on the European DP World Tour.

Fox responded, “Yeah, there was definitely some luck out there,” when asked if he felt Warne’s presence on the golf course. I was obviously pretty nervous during the final three holes. To be honest, I didn’t hit very many good shots down the 16th, 17th, and 18th holes. He was unquestionably contributing.”

After the win, the Kiwi golfer took to Instagram to dedicate his win to Warne: “This one is special, getting a win at the home of golf with the family watching can’t be beaten. @dunhilllinks truly is an amazing event and can’t be prouder to be the champ this year.
