The Open Championship came as a welcome distraction for the fans from the talks about the golf merger. In the first week of June, the golfing community received a major shock in the form of the PGA-LIV merger. The other thing on the mind of everyone is the Ryder Cup. Henrik Stenson has now opened up about being stripped from the captaincy of Team Europe.
Stenson was one of those who joined the LIV league in 2022. He was reported to have earned around $40 million for getting along on the Saudi-funded tour. The 47-year-old Sweden international was a part of the Open Championship which saw Brian Harman emerge as the winner. Stenson was announced as the captain of his side but was removed after his switch and replaced by Luk Donald.
According to the NY Post, Stenson was left disappointed in how things unfolded. He was supposed to lead the line and insisted that he could have carried on with the duties of captain while representing LIV Golf. He added how no one from the DP World Tour or the European Ryder Cup team was willing to have a conversation with him regarding the incident.
“There was a big willingness on my part to sit down and talk long before this thing got to where it got to,” Stenson said. “Thats’ my disappointment- There were certain people without naming names, that didn’t want to sit down and take those meetings,” he added.
Henrik Stenson sitting tight as drama regarding golf merger unfolds

Things have changed a lot since Henrik Stenson was stripped of the captaincy. The merger between the PGA and LIV-funded PIF has brought out several questions. One of them has been the player’s participation in the Ryder Cup. Various reports have surfaced of players not being happy to team up with those who left for the Saudi-backed tour.
Stenson, who has made five appearances at the prestigious team event, is watching closely what will unfold later on. The Swede claimed that he has no idea about how the allegiance between the two tours will work and what will happen with the Ryder Cup. “We’ll see where it ends up. I’m just sitting tight right now,” Stenson mentioned.
The preparation for the Ryder Cup has kicked off. The biennial tournament will witness some of Europe’s and the US’ top golfers going against each other in a team format. This year the event will be held in the Italian city of Rome and commence on September 29 and conclude on October 1. The US team won the tournament last time out with a score of 19-9.
