On Saturday, during the moving day of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, golfer Sam Burns accomplished a rare feat. The 5-time PGA Tour winner recorded an impressive slam-dunk ace to stun the crowd present in Memphis. This was his second ace (hole-in-one) of the season as he battled it out at the TPC Southwind.
Golf has been a sport dominated by fewer shots. The fewer tries a player takes, the better is the performance. Making a hole-in-one is one of the hardest things about this sport, and Burns knew it. This helped him finish the day with a three-under 67. However, he did not celebrate too much, as he faced the haunting scenario of missing out on the next stages of the tournament.
Sam Burns told Golf Digest about his moment and revealed his thoughts. “When you’re in 63rd place out of 70 people, there’s not a ton to celebrate. I couldn’t make any putts today, so I figured I’d just get it done on the first shot. It was fun,” he said. As mentioned above, this was his second ace of the season. The first one came during the US Open, where he managed to take everyone by surprise with his stunning effort at the 15th hole during the first round.
How is the St. Jude Championship shaping up after Round 3?
While Sam Burns might be placed in the tied-55 spot after the third round, there are some who have impressed everyone. One of them is Lucas Glover, who is currently leading the standings with a one-shot lead over Taylor Moore. Glover came into the event riding high on momentum from his triumphant performance at the Wyndham Championship.
The recent tour winner finished the day on top after shooting four-under 66. He was able to stay in front with the help of five birdies. He will enter the final round with a one-stroke lead over Moore. These two are followed by Tommy Fleetwood in third. Things get messy after this, as Max Homa and Jordan Spieth remain tied for the fourth spot.
A cluster of players is then locked in the tied sixth spot, including the likes of Rory Mcllroy and Patrick Cantlay. The tour policy member duo, along with four others, are five shots behind Glover on top. It would take a miraculous effort from here to turn things around and win.
Meanwhile, stars like Xander Schauffele, current world number one Scottie Scheffler, and Jon Rahm have had disappointing tournaments so far. They will now try to salvage the event with a top-half finish and also gear up for the next stages of the FedEx Cup.
