“It was frustrating” – Sergio Garcia discusses strange incident with a Wells Fargo rules official

Only a few months ago, Sergio Garcia chose to express his discontent with the PGA Tour to rules officials rather than through the legal system. Garcia reflected on his outburst during the first round of the Wells Fargo Championship in May, which was captured on PGA Tour Live mics, in an interview with ESPN’s Michael Collins.
“It was frustration,” Garcia said. “Mainly for the way the official acted towards me. He didn’t wanna hear anything that I had to say. He didn’t wanna hear what I was trying to explain to him.” On the tenth hole, Garcia was looking for his ball after hooking his tee shot on the left side of the par-5, close to a stream. He intended to search for his ball across the creek, which was still in the penalty area, but first, he had to figure out how to cross it. When Garcia’s allotted three minutes to locate his ball would start was the next issue.
Garcia was informed that it had already taken him four minutes to find his ball because, according to the official overseeing the hole at the time, it began before he crossed the stream. Then things started to become strange. Garcia said his now-famous comment, “I can’t wait to quit this tour,” after exchanging words with the official.
“I can’t wait to get out of here, my friend,” Garcia stated—which, of course, we now know he meant—that he would be joining the LIV Golf circuit the following month. “Just a couple more weeks and I won’t have to deal with you anymore.”

Sergio Garcia truly felt bad about that remark

“It was frustrating and that came out,” Garcia said. “I probably should have held it if I could have but in the heat of the moment I guess sometimes you can’t help it.” when speaking with Collins. What was even stranger was that Garcia had every right to be angry. Later, the PGA Tour explained that Garcia had received an incorrect judgment. Given that his time to find the ball didn’t begin until he crossed the water, he should have been let play.
“They actually told me that, yes, when I started looking for the ball, I found it within 2 minutes,” Garcia told Collins. “So I even had a minute to spare. I think the frustration was the talks about LIV and thinking about going. Then that happened and at that moment you feel like you’re getting a little bit screwed.”
After taking a drop, Sergio Garcia eventually hammered an iron onto the fairway for his third shot and recovered from 137 yards out for an interesting par. “When I found the ball I could actually hit it about 160 yards up the fairway,” he said. “Maybe I could have had the possibility of making a birdie or an easy par. But now I have to drop 60 yards back, hit a 3-iron and pitching wedge into a green, so it wasn’t easy to make a 5 and it wasn’t easy to make a 6.”
For what it’s worth, Garcia claimed that after the round, he and the official made up. “Thankfully for me, at the end of the round the official came and apologized,” he said.
