The fever of the Ryder Cup across the golfing world is on the rise. As the days get closer, the excitement level among fans increases even further. As Team Europe sets to host the defending champions this time around, several big names are missing from the tournaments. One of the stellar figures to miss out on the action is Sergio Garcia.
The 37-year-old is considered by many as a Ryder Cup legend. He has played a crucial role for Team Europe over the years gone by. This year though he was not selected for the squad. The first reason was his current performance. However, the bigger reason for it has been due to him appearing at LIV Golf and leaving the DP World Tour.
Apart from Brooks Koepka, no LIV players were selected for the Ryder Cup by either of the teams. Koepka’s selection came through his outstanding performances at the majors, where he won the PGA Championship and finished as runner-up at the Masters. The DP World Tour had banned players from LIV Golf following their switch.
According to a report from The Telegraph, Garcia was willing to pay his pending fine. He was charged by the tour for his inappropriate action. The veteran was willing to pay the fine of €700,000 to clear his due and be eligible to play for the team. However, he resigned from the tour, thus disqualifying himself from the tour membership. Garcia was also out of time to re-apply for a new membership, thus ending his dream.
Sergio Garcia’s Ryder Cup dream ends through legal action
Every player dreams of playing for their nation on the international stage. Spain’s Sergio Garcia has represented his nation and continent well on the big stage through his Ryder Cup performances. While he has been struggling at the greens in recent years, the biennial tournament has always brought out the best in him.

To put it in contrast, Garcia has not posted a top-10 finish at any majors since his 2017 Masters triumph. He is also currently ranked 17th in the ongoing LV Golf season. His best finish in the majors in the past six years is a T-27 at the U.S. Open. However, his Ryder Cup numbers are beyond stunning. In 10 appearances, he has collected 28.5 points, the most by any player for Team Europe.
There is no doubt that Garcia’s experience will be missed. Even his former friend Rory McIlroy claimed that this year the tournament is missing some veterans and that it was time to form new bonds. How will team Europe perform without some of these big names is what fans are eager to see at the tournament. They will get the chance to witness that in less than two weeks’ time from now.
