As the PGA Tour schedule heads towards a conclusion, events are popping up fast. With three majors in the book, the countdown to the final marquee event, the British Open, has begun. On Tuesday, there was a major break as LIV Golf star Sergio Garcia failed to qualify for the prestigious event. He will now miss this tournament for the first time since 1997.
Garcia has been a veteran of golf. The Spaniard has been making rounds at this course for nearly 25 years. However, since his move to LIV Golf, he has stopped receiving the OWGR points, which help players participate in PGA Tour events. As a result of this, he had to battle it out the hard way, and unfortunately, he failed to make the desired impact.
He started off strongly and was in pole position to grab one of the four qualifying spots. Two late bogeys in the final rounds crashed his dream of appearing at the event. Garcia eventually finished three shots off qualifying places. “I felt like I had it early on, I was rolling nicely,” he said before adding that it got tough after losing his momentum. He finished the qualifying tournament with a score of six-under-par 71. This led to a tie for the sixth spot.
Sergio Garcia disappointed not to appear at the 151st British Open
Ever since the rise of LIV Golf, many players have seen their careers criticized. Sergio Garcia was no different. The decision of the Spaniard to join the breakaway league saw rifts in golf and his own personal life. Players in the LIV league have to go through a qualification process to appear at these events.
Despite all this, Garcia has gone through all this to play at the tournaments. This will be the first time since 1997 that he will not be participating in the event. This stat alone is enough to show his longevity in the game of golf. Garcia was left disappointed after his performance but vowed to perform better next time. “It’s a shame but it’s the game. I was trying and unfortunately, it just wasn’t good enough,” he said about this performance later on.
This year, the British Open will return to the Royal Liverpool. The iconic event will commence on July 20 and draw to a close on July 23. The last time this event was hosted on this course, Garcia finished runner-up to his best friend Rory McIlroy in 2014. While his relationship with McIlroy has improved following the merger, Garcia will have to watch the event from the stands.
