On Monday, Luke Donald, captain of Team Europe announced his six picks for the Ryder Cup squad. He would handpick the six players who he thought deserved to be in Rome for the prestigious competition. One of the players he picked is Shane Lowry, whose name is being debated by the golfing community. The Irishman has now come out and defended his selection.

The 2019 Open Championship winner will join Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose as the experienced ones picked by Donald. Three Ryder Cup rookies in the form of Sepp Straka, Nicolai Hojgaard, and Ludvig Aberg complete the squad. Lowry’s selection has now come into question just like Justin Thomas, as he too has struggled over the greens recently.

His selection was further criticised when this year’s Italian Open winner, Adrian Meronk was surprisingly left out of the squad. Unlike Lowry, the Swedish international was the man in form and even registered a win at the venue where the tournament will be played.

Well, people have their opinion. Adrian has had a great year, and obviously, he’s unfortunate to miss out, but somebody had to miss out. I’m not going to sit here and disagree with Luke Donald. It was his decision,” Lowry said in his response. When reports of Meronk missing out from the team surfaced, LIV golfer Richard Bland took a dig at the Irish golfer and claimed on his Instagram account that he did not deserve to be a part of it.

The countdown for the biennial golf tournament between Team Europe and Team USA is underway. The Ryder Cup this time returns to Europe and will head to Rome where the two sets of teams battle it out for supremacy. Preparations for this tournament are already under as some golfers are gearing up for the Irish Open this week. Ireland’s own Shane Lowry is also participating and claims he is ready.

The 36-year-old admitted that he has not played at his best and has struggled at the golf course. “My form probably has not been the greatest, but in some of the bigger events, I have played some of my best golf and there’s nothing bigger than the Ryder Cup. Hopefully, I can go to Rome and show people what I’m made of,” he further added.

Following his appearance at the Irish Open, Lowry would look to retain his BMW PGA Championship in Wentworth a week later. This gives him a good opportunity to get his form back before making headlines at the Marco Simone course later in the month.
