“I botched it”- Sir Nick Faldo retires after 19 years as broadcaster
Sir Nick Faldo
CBS’s broadcast is ending. Sir Nick Faldo said goodbye from the booth at the 2022 Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina, on Sunday. The six-time major champion made his PGA Tour debut at Sedgefield in 1979. He was honoured with a plaque behind the ninth hole on the club’s Wall of Fame.
Faldo declared, tearfully, “I botched it” during his final television segment. “I was in a boat in Ireland when they asked whether I wanted to sit next to Jim Nantz. I fell out of the boat. We’re 16 years later. Thanks, crew,” he said. “They put out the pictures, we rattling, we have an easy job. Thanks. At 65, I’ve found three brothers. He thanked Nantz, Ian Baker-Finch, and Frank Nobilo, who accompanied him for the final round. “Yes”. The show also contained poignant messages from Faldo’s previous and current colleagues.
Celebrations of Sir Nick Faldo’s retirement
Trevor Immelman said, “I want to congratulate Sir Nick Faldo on his farewell CBS broadcast. At 15, I met Sir Nick. He took me under his wing and has been my mentor on the European and PGA Tours. He followed me into broadcasting. Thanks for everything, Nick. When I’m lead analyst, I’ll think about you. I’m excited to see you and Lindsay at Faldo Farm. Thanks, buddy. Nick, not everyone has a career, golf, and TV like you. You’ve proven yourself. To understand Nick Faldo, look backward. In your broadcasting career, you showed everyone, including us, your feelings. You were fearless. You were strong enough not to reveal them whilst playing golf. As a broadcaster, golfer, and friend, thanks mate.”
Jim Nantz remarked, “You documented the people, locations, and stories with humour, humility, and empathy.” As a broadcaster, you showed us more of your heart than your stern style as a player. May time be kind to you, friend.”
Ian Baker-Finch said, “You’ve taught me so much; thanks. I’m thrilled to put my name between yours on the Claret Jug, 1990-1991-1992. We’ve worked together in TV towers around the world for 20 years, the last 16 at CBS. We’re all sad to see you go. Well, old boy, maybe we’ll be partnered together on Montana’s Gallatin River with a fly rod.”
