As the merger talks between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) goes on, there still seems to be some animosity between the two tour players. In a stunning take on Tuesday, Talor Gooch took a massive shot at four-time major champion Rory McIlroy.
A huge talking point in golf recently has been the Official Golf World Rankings (OWGR). With the format LIV Golf uses, the golfers do not receive this points which takes a hit at their ranking which later affects their qualification for the majors. Gooch perhaps still not happy with this, would attack McIlroy and claimed if he manages to complete the grand slam this year, it should have an asterisk mark beside it.
The American International believes that McIlroy’s win will not be impressive as he will do without some of the best players in the major. The best players mentioned here by him are the LIV Golfers who will miss out from the first major of the year due to their OWGR rankings.
If Rory Mcllroy goes and completes his Grand Slam without some of the best players in the world, there's just going to be an asterisk. It's just the reality. I think everybody wins whenever the majors figure out a way to get the best players in the world there.Talor Gooch on Rory McIlroy as per Australian Golf Digest.
It will be interesting to see what the response of McIlroy will be to this. The North Irish golfer would likely be more fired after this as he attempts to secure the one major he has been missing. The closest he came to winning the green jacket was in 2022 when he came second and finished three strokes behind winner Scottie Scheffler.
Talor Gooch’s Wikipedia page gets edited by anonymous user following comments against Rory McIlroy
Following the huge bomb drop by Talor Gooch on Rory McIlroy, fans were left speechless. While some trolled and attacked him for his comments, one anonymous user took this “asterisk” thing too seriously. However, the person went on to put an asterisk on Gooch’s Wikipedia page and edited it out.
This was confirmed by Golf Channel’s Kevin Casey who shared a screenshot of it. In the screenshot, the page of Gooch was seen edited with an asterisk remark against all of his wins including his triumphs during the 2023 LIV Golf season with a footnote below indicating “Rory McIlroy not in field“.
Apart from this, another line regarding his trade from RangeGoats GC to Brooks Koepka‘s Smash GC was also added. That line claimed Gooch was traded to the team for “3 McRibs and 4 Bud Lights“.
Since then, the page has been edited back to normal and all the changes done have been removed. While Gooch did want to make a statement and express the feeling of LIV Golfers missing out from the event, this was not something he was expecting would happen.
