The 150th Open Championship at the Old Course has got off to quite the start, as the historic tournament sees 3 days of intense and powerful competition. Some of the best golfers in the world are coming together, as fans watch on. However, a few of them have received a rather cold reception- including the likes of Talor Gooch, Ian Poulter and Dustin Johnson. These golfers have one thing in common- they recently joined the controversial Saudi backed LIV Golf Series.

While they have been allowed to compete at the Open, they have been criticised for their actions. Yet, many of them have recently spoken up to defend themselves and their fellow golfers. Abraham Ancer said that “a really cool camaraderie” amongst the golfers Talor Gooch, currently sitting T8, also spoke on the matter after the second round of the Open. “Everybody, it feels like, is against us, and that’s OK. It’s kind of banded us together, I think,” he said according to the Guardian. Most of the LIV Golf players are doing quite well at the Open, showing that they are still in contention for a good finish.

Gooch agreed that his comments about the comparison of the Ryder Cup and LIV Golf Series may have been a bit aggressive. He apologised for them, saying that it was in the moment especially since he was experiencing a high of winning. “I was so pumped to be able to spray champagne like they do in F1. I was in the moment. Maybe a little aggressive of a comment. Rightfully so, I’ve taken a little bit of heat for it.”

Regardless of any of the criticism, a strong LIV contingent has formed after the second round. While the R&A may not publicly admit it, there is quite a big possibility of handing the Claret Jug over to a member of the new breakaway tour in the most historic of settings.
