The legacy of Talor Gooch’s career will be forever linked to his incredible feat at the LIV event in Adelaide, where he etched his name in history by becoming the first player to go back-to-back 62 in his career.
The Grange, a notoriously challenging course, proved to be a stern test for most players, but Gooch’s remarkable performances over two rounds set a new record for the fledgling tour. However, during the final round, he faced the most pressure as he held on to his almost unbelievable 10-shot lead to collect the $5.7 million winner’s cheque, a feat that will be remembered for years to come.
As Gooch teed it up on Sunday, he knew that nerves would play a big part in the outcome of the tournament. Despite being flawless during the opening two rounds, a Sunday charge from almost everyone, including hometown hero Cameron Smith, put pressure on the leader.

The chase was on, but Talor Gooch remained composed, never faltered, and held on to win the tournament by just two shots. Anirban Lahiri came close, finishing second after a closing 65.
As the pressure mounted, Gooch’s pursuit of the massive winner’s cheque wobbled. His first-day sandbelt fears were biting, and he faced the ghosts of Norman, who famously squandered a six-shot lead in the final round of the 1996 Masters.
According to Fox Sports, the payday looked uncertain, but Gooch managed to steady his hands and maintain his composure to clinch one of the greatest moments of his career. The final round proved to be a nail-biting experience for Gooch and his fans. The American sprayed his tee shot on the ninth hole right after back-to-back bogeys, and his swing seemed to be falling apart.
He managed to make par on the ninth hole, but then flew over the green from a front bunker having already come out of the trees on the 10th. Four nervous, ugly, hand-shaking putts resulted in a double bogey, and his lead was down to two.
Despite the intense pressure, Gooch managed to hold on to his lead and win the tournament. Smith, who is yet to get on the LIV podium in 2023, delighted with a hole-out from a bunker as one of his six birdies.
He put together a final round 66 full of near misses to end his homecoming adventure in a tie for fourth. The tournament was an exciting and unforgettable showcase of the best of professional golf.
