The golfing world on Tuesday saw a massive development from LIV Golf’s camp as CEO Greg Norman dropped a huge revelation. The Australian international announced the league’s decision to withdraw their application for Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR). Talor Gooch has now reacted to it.
Gooch has been in the spotlight recently for his controversial remarks on Rory McIlroy. A week ago, he launched a scathing attack on the four-time major champion and claimed there should be an “asterisk” in front of his name if he ends up winning the Masters as he (Gooch) and some others LIV Golfers won’t be in the field. Now he has sounded off on the ranking points.
In an hour long conversation with Flushing It Golf, the 2023 LIV Golf champion claimed OWGR would only work for them if they started awarding points retroactively and not cut them for some reasons.
The only way OWGR works for LIV is if they retroactively awards points and don’t deduct points from events for some reason... If it’s not retroactive and full points, it’s not right and it screws us players.Talor Gooch on OWGR.
Since joining LIV Golf, Gooch has continued to pummel down the rankings. Despite winning three times on the circuit last season, his rankings did not improve as OWGR did not distribute any points to them. At the moment, the 32-year-old is ranked at 476th position, far away from the top players.
Talor Gooch slams OWGR for not doing the right thing, claims it’s time to “move on”
After sounding off on OWGR for “screwing them” Talor Gooch further slammed the organization for not doing the right thing (finding a way to distribute points to LIV Golf). The American International later claimed it was thus time to “move on” from them.
Gooch expressed that very few people and organizations have done the right thing. This was a direct reference to the other rankings such as Data Golf and The Universal Golf Ranking (TUGR).
As per this, Gooch is ranked way higher than his current OWGR ranking. He is currently placed at 15th in TUGR and 33rd in Data Golf rankings.
Very few people or organisations have done the right or just thing... So it’s highly unlikely the OWGR would do the right thing... Especially considering their choices, behavior and alliances etc. So it’s time to move on.Talor Gooch on OWGR.
What will LIV Golf do now to get the points remains to be seen. The 54-hole circuit’s last option would be to wait for the ongoing golf merger between the PGA Tour and PIF to go through and hope the two entities could find a solution for this huge problem.
