Since US Team captain Zach Johnson picked Justin Thomas as one of the Ryder Cup captains, fans over social media including prominent golfers have blasted him for his selection. The latest to join the ongoing chaos is another prominent figure, Hank Haney, who has been the longtime coach of Tiger Woods.
Haney called the Ryder Cup team “the Boys Club” and went further to address that no matter who Johnson picked as the captain the US Team would have been favored regardless. His comments sparked outrage on social platforms as many supported the statement and others spoke otherwise.
One of the players who spoke against Haney’s statement was none other than vice-captain Fred Couples. Couples stated that it’s a “player’s team” noting that no one can tell a captain who he should be picking. “You can’t have guys telling the captain ‘here’s who I want, should be on it’.”
Fred Couples actively defends Justin Thomas’ pick on the Ryder Cup team
The selection process was going smoothly until Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson named 2023 under-performing Justin Thomas as part of Team USA. While many are satisfied with the pick, several have questioned J.T.’s selection following his low-scoring performance this year.
With J.T. on the team, golfers like Keegan Bradley, Cameron Young, and Denny McCarthy missed out on the 2023 Ryder Cup opportunity. Bradley took to Twitter (now known as X) stating he’s bummed out hearing the captain’s pick. He admitted feeling like an “outsider” who was left out of an important team.
Fans have been questioning Thomas’ qualifications and why he was chosen instead of Bradley who clearly scored a better record than him. Fred Couples boldly noted that it was due to Bradley’s poor relations with the team members. “He’s not tight with them. If it had 20 percent to do with it, I won’t argue that,” the vice-captain stated.
Doubts have been cast on the US Team for winning the Ryder Cup this year. If the team wins the Cup everything will be sorted with one further questioning the captain’s pick. But if the team struggles or fails to secure the Cup, Zach Johnson will be blasted on social platforms for his 6 man team captain’s choice.
Johnson confidently stated “you just don’t leave JT out” labeling him as “the heart and soul of Team USA”. Johnson has also been reserved to accept LIV golfers in his team, the only exception being Brooks Koepka. Players like Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau lost the cut for their relations with the Saudi circuit.
The 12-man Ryder Cup team now consists of prominent golfers like – Scottie Scheffler, Brian Harman, Patrick Cantlay, Wyndham Clark, Max Homa, Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth, Collin Morikawa, Koepka, Rickie Fowler, Sam Burns, and JT.
