This past Sunday marked the end of the 2023 Hero World Challenge. An event that saw Scottie Scheffler claim another title this year also marked the return of Tiger Woods. While the veteran had a tough time and finished 18th in the unofficial 72-hole event, his rankings took a massive jump. Woods has jumped over 430 spots and has entered the top 1000 rankings as per the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).

Since his absence from the field, the ranking of Woods had taken a severe hit. Recently he hit a career rank low at 1307th spot as he battled on to recover from his injury. His appearance at the Hero World Challenge and his performance have elevated his rank by a huge margin.

As per Golf Digest, Woods started the tournament last week ranked at 1,328th position. Over the course of the weekend, the 47-year-old leaped over 430 spots and is now currently ranked at 898th position.

Since the rankings were updated, the fans have slammed Woods and the OWGR committee for their distribution of points. Will Zalatoris, returning from an injury after eight months, finished bottom of the Hero World Challenge rankings. Despite this, he earned more World Rankings points than Alex Fitzpatrick who finished tied for eighth spot at the Australian Open this weekend.

Fans unhappy on social media following latest OWGR update

The Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) is a criteria used to rank professional golfers around the world. Points are allotted to players for their performances on the greens by the OWGR committee. The rankings points though differ from event to event as some receive more points compared to others as seen in this case with the Hero World Challenge.

Fans on social media are now unhappy with the distribution of points by the OWGR. The huge rank jump of Tiger Woods has caused a huge debate on this topic once again. One user claimed that the system had become a “joke“. Check out some reactions regarding this huge development below:

The OWGR and its committee have been in the spotlight recently due to their decision regarding LIV Golf. The breakaway 54-hole circuit does not receive these points which affects the rankings of several players. Their application to receive OWGR points was denied, leading to some fans berating the ranking system.

It is now likely that Woods’ rank jump will be talked about and discussed. He though would probably not pay much attention to it as he prepares to participate in the PNC Championship with his son, Charlie in a few days time.
