Despite being ROBBED off endorsements after SEX scandal, Tiger Woods’ $ was far ahead of superstars like Kobe Bryant, Alex Rodriguez and Shaquille O’Neal
Tiger Woods
After what transpired in November 2009 when his numerous extramarital affairs were leaked to the world, leading to his divorce with ex-wife Elin Nordegren, Tiger Woods lost $22 million in endorsements the following year. Precisely, they had gone down from $92 million to $70 million in 2010.
Gatorade, AT&T and Accenture were some of the big sponsors he lost although Nike stuck to him in the difficult times. However, this year Woods became the first golfer to become a billionaire, getting all that was wasted back in multiplicative ways.
The most interesting part to note here is that such was Woods’ legacy and market value that even when he was going through his worst patch after divorce, the American golfer was much richer than sports superstars of the likes of Alex Rodriguez, Shaquille O’Neal, the late Kobe Bryant, Derek Jeter, Peyton Manning, and Dwyane Wade.
Probably the only guys who came close were Phil Mickelson if we consider the golfing world and basketball superstar LeBron James, who incidentally also became the first player from the NBA to become a billionaire in 2022.
The legacy of LeBron James compared to Tiger Woods
NBA superstar LeBron James was an achiever right from his young amateur days. James had a basketball IQ that helped him spot gameplays in an instant and was not selfish to try and keep scoring himself.
Even before he entered the NBA, James had the difficult yet satisfying proposition of having to choose between multiple endorsement deals for his sports career. Brands such as Nike, Reebok and Adidas were lining up to get James on their side.
However, James waited on the advice of his mother and eventually managed to strike a mindboggling $10 million deal with Nike, which at the time was a landmark figure considering even the likes of Woods and Kobe were only signed for $35 million and $40 million respectively by the same apparel company.
Since the beginning of his career, he went from earning $4.01 million (US) per season to a whopping $39.2 million (US) during the 2021-22 season. During the last years, his net worth has nearly doubled from $550 to $850 million dollars. For a player who also had a very bright future in the sport of Football, he has come a long way in the Basketball community. He also has a contract with Nike at the moment worth $100 million (US).
The King owns a beautiful home in Los Angeles’ Beverly Hills that spans 13,000 square feet and costs $36.75 million (US). This is one of his three houses in the United States as he owns one more in LA and another in Akron, Ohio. He owns 15 cars all worth over $2.5 million (US) which include the Lamborghini Aventador, a Rolls Royce, Mercedes Maybachs, a Porsche, and three amazing Ferraris.
One of his most recent purchases was the acquisition of a 1% stake in the MLB team Boston Red Sox. He also owns a 2% stake in the soccer group Liverpool FC according to Forbes. LeBron also owns a production house called SpringHill Entertainment which produced his much-anticipated Space Jam: A New Legacy. Space James seems apt for the level he has been on has skyrocketed since his start.
