The magnitude of this deal was so severe, that the US Senate decided to intervene in it. During the hearing on Tuesday, several interesting and shocking points were revealed. The LIV Golf which started in 2022, has a different style of play compared to the PGA Tour. The event focus more on team play with forty-eight players divided into twelve teams. Though there is no correct information on how those two golfers reacted, it likely did not go down well.

While Woods is yet to offer any thoughts regarding the merger, McIlroy had some strong words. The North Irishman expressed how he felt like a tool used by the PGA Tour for this deal. Many players have raised their voices in a similar way, claiming that they feel betrayed by the tour. The two golfers had been standing in the front with the tour in their fight with the LIV.

Woods had turned down a huge contract of around $700-$800 million to play for the Saudi-funded tour. Two weeks after the merger was announced to the world, the US Senate invited Jay Monahan, Yasir-Al Rumayyan, and Greg Norman to testify about the deal before them. All of them though citied personal and schedule conflict as a reason for missing out. The hearing was later attended by Chief Operating Officer of PGA Tour, Ron Price, and Jimmy Dunne. In the documents released before the Senate, a shocking wish of the PIF governor was revealed.

As per the slideshow titled “Best of both Worlds,” presented during the meeting between the two boards, the LIV side suggested a strange proposition. They presented that Al-Rumayyan be given full membership at the Augusta National. The course is one of the historic fields in golf and serves as a host to the iconic “The Masters”. These negotiations were reported to be declined.

Further points revealed in the presentation pitched the idea of rebranding two elevated tours of PGA under the name of PIF or Aramco. One of these “renamed events” would have taken place in Saudi Arabia. However, the most staggering point was the proposal of a “world team” tournament between the LIV and PGA. This event would have seen sixteen team captains leading their sides following a live draft on tv.
