Davis Love III spoke to Tiger Woods as a “trusted employer” and said that the 15-time major champion had instructed him to shield his Presidents Cup competitors from LIV Golf’s outside distractions. Love III is the USA’s Presidents Cup captain, but his preparations have fallen apart as a number of potential players have switched to LIV Golf. Regardless of the outcome of a lawsuit launched by 11 LIV players, spearheaded by Phil Mickelson, Love III, a Ryder Cup veteran, has already declared he will not select any players who have moved up to the LIV division.

Davis Love III has stated that he has been investing time to helping the PGA Tour in its fight to fend off the Saudi-funded series after Woods rejected an offer in the neighbourhood of $800 million to switch to LIV. Love III responded, “He is an advisor,” when asked if Woods would be engaged in his Presidents Cup plans. Tiger has excelled the past few of times.

He’s been heavily involved. He struggles to play and travel because of other ailments, so he is working to be in shape. However, he is very committed in trying to support the Tour and his foundation. “I talked to him the other day, he is a trusted boss now,” my friend said. “He is keeping busy and now he is assisting me.”

To ensure that his Presidents Cup players are in the greatest possible condition to defeat the Internationals at Quail Hollow at the end of September, Tiger Woods told Love III that he must protect them from the current controversy. According to Love III, “I spoke to him and asked him what I should do. He instructed me to safeguard your team, To get them ready to play, to keep them safe from the outside world, and to go play golf because we want to go and win in Charlotte is my responsibility.”

“The game goes on and I have to create my pairings, my picks over the next month and be ready so the players that show up have the best chance to win,” said one player. “There are guys out there to win the Wyndham (Championship), and there is a legal struggle going on.”
When asked how he would feel if the LIV players won their legal battle to be allowed to compete in the Presidents Cup and the PGA Tour, Davis Love III responded, “I would not pick them. They aren’t entering our team room, either. If there were three or four of those people in the team room, I would leave.”
