“What a farce”: Twitter reacts to Phil Mickelson’s 2 year suspension by PGA Tour for LIV Golf recruiting
Phil Mickelson
The LIV Golf series has caught the limelight once again, as Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau and 9 other golfers are now suing the PGA Tour in an antitrust lawsuit. When the golfers defected from the PGA Tour, the tour decided to sanction and suspend the players, much to their dismay. This has caused the golfers to file a lawsuit, since they want to play both the PGA Tour and the LIV Series.
In the lawsuit it was discovered that golfer Phil Mickelson had actually been suspended for two years by the PGA Tour. The lawsuit, which seeks to have the indefinite suspensions lifted while seeking temporary injunctions for three players – Talor Gooch, Matt Jones and Hudson Swafford – to allow them to compete in the upcoming FedEx Cup playoffs, is being backed by LIV Golf Investments.

Was Phil Mickelson suspension deserved? Twitter debates
As disclosed in the lawsuit, Phil Mickelson was suspended for two months. He then applied for reinstatement on 20th June but was denied the same. After competing in the first LIV event in London, Mickelson’s suspension was extended until 31st March, 2023. The last straw was when he played in the Portland LIV event- this caused the suspension to extend again until 31st March 2024.
As a lifetime member, Mickelson is not required to play a minimum number of events, and therefore he believes that his membership should remain. The PGA Tour’s policy has been to grant a player conflicting event releases for overseas tournaments, up to three per year, with stipulations beyond that. It declined such releases to the London event due to its belief that LIV was a hostile competitor.
The debate about the LIV Golf Series is still very much up in the air. The hypocrisy of fans to call out only one series when there are several problems in other fields of sports has not sat well with many. Yet others also believe that this blatant Saudi sponsorship is not good news for a world that is trying to eradicate all ill.
