“Zero chance he’s staying now”: Twitter rips apart PGA Tour for penalising Cameron Smith a little too late at FedEx St. Jude Championships
Cameron Smith
The FedEx St. Jude Championships are now onto their final round, the the tournament has never been more exciting as some do-or-die moments take place on the course. However, things do not seem to be going the good way for Cameron Smith. One of the favourite golfers on the field currently in contention to win the title, Smith has faced one pretty big setback- he has been penalised by the PGA Tour.
Smith has been assessed a two stroke penalty by the PGA for “improper placement of the ball” while taking relief on the 4th hole of Saturday’s third round. Cameron Smith will now begin the last round -9, four shots behind the current leader JJ Spaun. Not a particularly ideal situation for Smith, who was up to win the Championship.
“Prior to the start of the final round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, Cameron Smith was assessed a two-stroke penalty for a breach of Rule 14.7 (playing the ball from the wrong place) on Hole No. 4 during the third round where he was operating under Rule 17.1 (when ball was in penalty area),” the PGA Tour said in a statement that was released.
Twitter blasts PGA Tour for poor decisions over penalising Cameron Smith
The decision did not sit well with the public, who have also been rooting for the Australian. “Smith’s score has been adjusted and he will begin the final round at 201 (-9).” Amongst rumours that Smith will now make the switch to LIV Golf after the FedEx Championships, it almost seems like this decision has sealed the deal for the golfer.
“It looked like his ball was awfully close to the line, but we thought the player knew he couldn’t play a ball that wasn’t touching the penalty area. We decided to take a second look at it and we thought it was close enough,” to then ask Smith about it,” PGA Tour’s chief referee Gary Young said. On asking Smith about it, he said that it was definitely touching the line, but he had no idea about the rule.
“Once (Cameron Smith) found out it was a two stroke penalty,” Young said. “he said the rules are the rules.” Who will win the FedEx St. Jude Championships, now that the circumstances have changed.
