Webb Simpson, a PGA Tour board member, has now taken a shot at Dustin Johnson. The golfer dropped a damning claim regarding the former Masters’ champion jump to LIV Golf in 2022.
Johnson, also known by his initials “DJ”, was one of the big names from the PGA Tour to leave them and join the newly established LIV Golf. The former World No. 1, would later become the captain of his team 4Aces GC.
He and his side would enjoy a good start on their new tour as he was named the individual champion and his side claimed the team championship. While the 39-year-old did enjoy success in 2023 and emerged victorious at the LIV Golf Tulsa event, his performances in the majors were not up to the mark of many.
Simpson, a friend of his has now claimed that all of Johnson has blown the chance of entering the golf record books.
I love Dustin (Johnson), he’s a buddy of mine, but he had the opportunity to go down as one of the top 10 greatest players ever, and as soon as he signed his name to LIV – he still could be, but in the record books, we’ll never know. It’s not going to count. Things like that make me a little sad.Webb Simpson on Dustin Johnson as per Golfweek.
Brandel Chamblee backs Webb Simpson’s take on Dustin Johnson
One of the biggest debates in golf that still carries on is the switch of players from the PGA Tour to LIV Golf. Despite the announcement of the golf merger which could see the two tours working together if an agreement can be reached, some still cannot forgive the players for switching tours.
Brandel Chamblee is one of them. The Golf Channel analyst has time and again attacked some LIV Golf stars including Phil Mickelson for their move. He has once again taken the chance to take a dig at the PIF-backed tour by backing the take of Webb Simpson.
Simpson would hit out at Dustin Johnson during the recent Sony Open. His words were later shared on social media. Chamblee would soon come across this and requote the tweet of NUCLR Golf on X and back him.
What Webb Simpson says here is at the marrow of those that took the money and went to LIV. Yes they got richer and it may be increasingly hard to criticize their decisions to go to LIV, but it is undeniably at the cost of their legacies.Brandel Chamblee backing Webb Simpson on X.
These words of Chamblee have once again left the fans wondering about LIV Golf. With the ongoing merger deadline extended until April 2024, only time will tell whether these two prominent tours will be able to work together or not.
