Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are often closely tied with the Major Championships. The Majors in golf are some of the most exciting and prestigious competitions a golfer can play on the PGA Tour or throughout their lifetime. Holding a long legacy of traditions and some of the best golfers picking up the Cups, winning a Major can only be one’s dream come true.
Four Majors happen every year- the Masters Tournament, the PGA Championship, the US Open, and the Open Championship. The Masters is a very well-known tournament, especially for its special history and iconic green jackets. Any holders of the green jacket consider themselves to be a part of the Augusta National Club, which is an honor.
The Majors hold a special place in the hearts of many, and winning all four majors in a year is any PGA Player’s dream. There are two iconic golfers who have probably conquered so many Major wins, that it will leave others in shock. These are none other than Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. Both the golfers have had an illustrious career full of wins and championships. But how do they stack up against each other?
Tiger Woods’ wins at The Major Championships
Woods is the winner of a whopping 15 Major Championship wins over the span of his career. The golfing legend won a Major as recently as 2019 when he made an incredible comeback after an accident. He is only 3 wins away from tying the record with all-time record holder Jack Nicklaus. It had been 11 years since Woods had won a Major, and he broke that streak in 2019.
His first-ever win came at the 1997 Masters Tournament, where he won by a margin of 12 strokes. Since then he has won 4 PGA Championships (1999, 2000, 2006, 2007), a total of 5 Masters Championships(1997, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2019), 3 US Opens, and 3 Open Championships (2000, 2002, 2008). He has certainly made his mark in the golfing world.
Phil Mickelson’s wins at The Major Championships
Mickelson on the other hand, has won 6 Major Championships throughout his career. He won his most recent Major at the PGA Championship in 2021, just before defecting to the LIV Golf Series. This was his first win and a big break since 2013. This also made him history’s oldest golf Major winner of all time.
Mickelson’s first-ever win came at the 2004 Masters Tournament, after which he took Major wins for 2 years in a row. He has won 3 Masters Tournaments (2004, 2006, 2010), 2 PGA Championships (2005, 2021) and 1 Open Championship (2013). He has never won a US Open Championship but has had an overall 39 finishes in the top 10 across all the Majors he has played.
It is not easy to win a Major, and both golfers have done quite the job of keeping up with their skills and winning Majors over the span of decades. However, in this case, Woods seems to be unbeatable with 15 Majors in his hand, really sealing his fate as one of the greatest golfers of all time.
