The 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome saw Team Europe prevail over Team USA by a scoreline of 16.5-11.5. While the memories of this event are still fresh in the minds of players, the focus on the next event has already started. A few days after Paul Azinger suggested Tiger Woods to be the new Ryder Cup captain of Team USA, the name of Sergio Garica has also popped up. He has now come forward to be the successor of Luke Donald at the event in 2025.
The 37-year-old Spanish international is considered one of the greatest Ryder Cup players. This weekend was just the second time he had missed this biennial tournament in his career. Following his switch to LIV Golf, Garcia was fined by the DP World Tour. He would resign from this membership. A stunning report before the tournament suggested he was willing to clear off his fine to appear at this year’s event.
Donald, the winning captain this year was asked whether he would consider returning at the next event. While he did not rule out anything, the 40-year-old Englishman did mention that the whole process was long. If he does not return, Garcia could be the one leading the helm. With the sport of golf expected to bring in some changes in the future with the PGA-LIV merger, things could be a little different at the 2025 event.
Sergio Garcia vs. Tiger Woods at 2025 Ryder Cup: A potential rematch at Bethpage
Ever since former Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger mentioned the idea of Tiger Woods becoming the new captain, the golfing community has exploded. This year’s captain Zach Johnson had a hard time at the greens and many fans bashed him. While there has been no confirmation as of yet, if Woods and Sergio Garcia do get appointed, fans could be treated to a glorious rematch.
Garcia has one of the greatest rivals of Woods. One of the best matchups between these two came all the way back in 2002 at the Bethpage Course, home of the 2025 event. In a classic to-and-fro matchup, Woods was able to hold his ground and claim the major championship. He would finish one stroke ahead of his Spanish rival.
The idea of Woods going up against Garcia has also got Greg Norman‘s son, Greg Norman Jr. excited. He would post a tweet on his official X (formerly called Twitter) account. He would write “2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage. Captain Tiger Woods vs. Captain Sergio Garcia.” This post led to Garcia eventually reposting his tweet, expressing his pleasure and delight in participating in the next event.
While the fans have given their voice in this, the decision of appointing the captains will be made by their respective associations. For now, the fans can look forward to the final few fall events of the PGA Tour and the LIV Golf series finale before coming back on this topic of Garcia and Woods.
