Golfers frequently make mistakes because they are always looking for ways to get better. Players constantly search for ways to gain that extra one percent, whether it be a new bagman or coach.

Will Zalatoris, 25, is regarded as a potential star in the sport after posting outstanding performances in Major and PGA Tour competitions. However, Zalatoris broke up with his longtime caddie, Ryan Goble, on Friday night, calling it “the worst decision he’s ever had to make.”

“Ryan is my forever brother”, said Zalatoris. “It’s been a bit of a trying month for us, and it was beginning to show in our relationship. I know that’s what guys say after they break up, but it was. It started — what was happening on the course was starting to spill off the course and that’s not what you want. We were guys that would love to have dinner and hang out. He is a wonderful buddy who I like dearly, but I told him I had to put my own needs first.

Zalatoris continued, “He’s just a fantastic friend, as I stated. You can tell how difficult this decision was for me, especially given the date, but I believe it was just becoming a little unhealthier for both of us, and it was — clearly it hurts “However, going ahead, Joel Stock will be on the bag through the Playoffs and pretty much the entire time after that. However, as you indicated in relation to Josh, it was fantastic to have him read the lies out loud. He deserves praise for the hole-out on hole 11 and for saving my round today, especially after a somewhat rocky start.”

Goble had been on Zalatoris’ backpack during the early years of the Korn Ferry Tour during their three years of collaboration. Goble made his professional debut in July 2019 and assisted his employer in winning the PGA Tour’s Rookie of the Year award in 2020–2021 while Zalatoris achieved many top–five performances in Major Championships.

The two were obviously close since they needed to eagle two holes on Friday to make the cut. Zalatoris said they hugged after the conversation: “Basically, for the past three years, he has been my best friend. It was the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make in my golf career because he was the only caddie I had on any sanctioned Tour, including the PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour. I had to make the decision that I believe will benefit me the most moving ahead. Nothing is permanent, as I mentioned, so we’ll kind of see where things go from here.”
