“Proud of the way Anirban Lahiri played” – Coach Vijay Divecha lauds Indian golfer’s performance at The Players Championship
Anirban Lahiri
Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri, who holds world rank 322, was on a roll at the recently-concluded The Players Championship. The Pune native finished second, just a shot behind the winner from Australia – Cameron Smith to claim the whopping prize money of $2.18 million.
Lahiri was earlier in the sole lead as he raced to the top with five birdies in the opening nine holes of Round 3 on the penultimate day of the tournament. However, no one had given a chance to the 34-year-old Lahiri, who had just snapped a streak of three consecutive missed cuts with a T-74th finish at last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Reacting to Anirban’s astonishing performance at the TPC Sawgrass, Vijay Divecha, his coach of nearly 20 years, was proud of the way he fought till the end.
“Anirban is finally showing us what he is capable of doing”
“I’m proud of the way he played and liked the fact that he kept coming back despite all the setbacks – a double bogey on the eighth hole,” Divecha told The Times Of India from his academy in Ahmedabad.
“He came back fighting, made a birdie on the next hole and an eagle on the 11th hole. That’s fantastic to see, to be able to keep coming back and give it everything till the last hole. That is more encouraging for me than anything else. I think he is finally showing us what he is capable of doing,” added the famed coach.
“You learn from all these things. You start learning how to take things forward. Also, I think one of the things is that they added some weight to his irons, and they are working much better now. It’s a culmination of all these things,” the 67-year-old said about the turnaround in the two-time Olympian’s fortunes.
